Research from the Cleveland Clinic estimates that about 15% of the population suffers from arachnophobia, or the fear of spiders. People who are skittish of these eight-legged arachnids can become especially upset when spiders infiltrate their home. Spiders aren’t the most dangerous pest you could have hanging around, though, and learning about the way they help us may subside some fear. Let’s learn more about spiders in Nashville, courtesy of the pest control professionals at Ameri Care Services.

Are spiders poisonous?

There are only two spiders in the United States that are dangerous to humans–the brown recluse and the black widow. Brown recluse spiders are between 1 and  ½ inches long with light-brown legs and a dark brown, violin-shaped mark on their upper body. They also only have three pairs of eyes, as opposed to the usual four pairs that other species of spiders have. The black widow has a shiny, black body with a reddish orange hourglass marking on their body.

If you are bitten by either a Brown Recluse or a Black Widow, it is important to seek medical attention immediately.

Symptoms of these bites may include:

  • Itching or rash
  • Muscle pain or cramping
  • Pain from the location of the bite
  • Sweating
  • Discoloration in the skin around the location of the bite
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Headache, fever, chills, nausea/vomiting
  • High blood pressure

With immediate medical treatment, you can avoid more serious side effects. Although that list may seem scary, these are the only two spider species that have a bite that’s dangerous for humans.

Can spiders be beneficial?

Spiders are a very important predator in whatever ecosystem in which they exist. They feed on many other common household pests, such as flies, mosquitoes, cockroaches, wasps and more. They help suppress these populations, effectively providing a natural method of pest control inside your house. Generally speaking, spiders are harmless to and not aggressive at all toward humans. They will only attack when they are feeling threatened, so you don’t have to run when you see one. Having a few house spiders around actually can help limit the spread of disease carried by other insects, too.
