Whether you have a basement, a crawlspace, or both, one thing is true. The buildup of moisture in either location can cause all sorts of problems for your home. This is why Ameri Care Services offers waterproofing for both basements and crawl spaces among the range of services we provide. Today on the blog, we look at some of the most common questions we receive from customers just like you about our waterproofing services.

How does waterproofing work?

For crawl spaces, we can remove any existing moisture and then install a vapor barrier that seals off the space to prevent future infiltration of moisture and also keep the area free of pests.

Keeping moisture out of a basement is somewhat more complex. It entails ensuring that a proper drainage system is in place and, when that system becomes overwhelmed, using a sump pump to remove the moisture.

What are the risks of moisture in the basement or crawl space?

Persistent moisture or dampness in the basement or crawl space can allow mold or mildew to accumulate in your home. This can negatively affect the air quality in your home and have an aggravating effect if anyone in your home suffers from allergies. Wetness in the crawl space also can affect the surrounding wood, which can rot and lead to structural damage in your home.

How does a sump pump work?

The sump pump is key to removing excess water from either the basement or crawl space. This electrically powered machine removes the water from either area and funnels it into a sump pit in the floor. Ameri Care Services works with and installs sump pumps of the highest quality, made by Zoeller.

What causes moisture issues in a basement or crawl space?

Accumulated water in your basement or crawl space comes from one of two places, either inside the house or outside. Outdoor sources of moisture may include drainage from the foundation, leaks through below-grade walls, blocked circulation of exterior air and water seepage through either brick or the foundation to the crawl space or the basement. Indoor sources of moisture may include leaky appliances, spilled water in the living area of your home, runoff moisture from house plants or high humidity levels.

What additional measures can you use to reduce moisture?

For basements, after waterproofing has been completed, we also can install a dehumidifier in either your basement or crawl space. This helps limit future buildup of moisture but also can improve the air quality and lower humidity inside your home, as up to 40% of the air on the first floor of your home comes up from either the basement or crawl space. Ameri Care Services is proud to be a certified provider of AprilAire humidifiers for our customers.
