You may have seen media coverage last fall about the bedbug outbreaks that caused panic overseas in major European cities like Paris and London. Well, a popular American vacation destination also has experienced some recent issues with bed bugs as well. That’s why, today on the blog, your Nashville pest control professionals at Ameri Care Services look at bed bugs, the threats they pose and how we can help.

What happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas …

A recent report by KLAS cited recent findings from the Southern Nevada Health District, whose inspectors detected bed bugs at four resort hotels on the Las Vegas Strip within a span of five months. The insects were detected between September of 2023 and January of 2024.

The affected resorts included the Encore, the Venetian, the Mirage and the Excalibur Hotel and Casino. When bed bugs are detected at a Las Vegas hotel, the Southern Nevada Health District issues fees to the affected property and can even close rooms if a persistent problem is identified.

In response to the report by KLAS, the Nevada Resort Association issued a statement that said, in part: “The health and safety of our guests and employees is the resort industry’s highest priority. With approximately 155,000 hotel rooms and 41 million annual visitors, four rooms impacted over a nearly five-month period that generated millions of room nights shows these are extremely rare and isolated occurrences.”

The statement continues, “Unfortunately, these pests can be transported anywhere unwittingly in luggage and clothing. While incredibly rare, when reported our members take swift action in accordance with health and safety requirements.”

It is advised to inspect a hotel for signs of bed bugs. Check the mattress and furniture for any tiny black spots, which can be bed bug fecal matter.

The areas where signs of bed bugs are most likely include:

  • Underneath the bedding
  • Around the mattress and box springs
  • Underneath pillows and cushions
  • On any furniture upholstery
