Watch Out for these Pest Control Scams

Finding the right pest control company to serve your home or business can be difficult. Complicating the process, there are so many unethical individuals and organizations out there that aim to scam individuals under the guise of providing pest control services. Today on the blog, we look at some of the most common pest control scams and what you and your loved ones can do to protect against them.

The most common pest control scams

  • Door-to-door offers: A supposed pest control provider will go door to door in a neighborhood offering a free inspection to look for pests. Many of these scammers provide or make up evidence of an infestation to try and get you to sign up for service.
  • Bed bug extermination: There’s another common tactic where a scammer will claim they can use prolonged exposure to heat to kill bed bugs by using a portable heater. There’s no consensus this tactic even works, and even if a portable heater does temporarily eject bugs from a particular room in the house, they will just return when the temperature lowers.
  • Permanent contracts: Scammers like to push long-term if not lifetime agreements. They will tell you that your infestation is so serious that multiple appointments will be needed to treat the total problem. Scammers will only offer year-long contracts, and many of these are set up to renew automatically at the end of that year, or have complicated cancellation policies that make it very difficult to extricate yourself from the deal.
  • Using unlicensed technicians: Many times, when it comes time for a scammer to actually send someone to your home or business, the person they send does not have a license. Unlicensed pest control work has a host of different potential issues and liabilities. That’s why you should only work with a company that can provide proof of licensure before any work occurs.

Watch for these signs of a scam

  • Is the person using high-pressure sales tactics?
    • Be wary if someone, especially an individual who is going door to door, says you need immediate or urgent service.
  • Does the deal seem too good to be true?
    • If so, it probably is. Proceed with caution if a special price is offered that seems extraordinarily low.
  • Is the company trying to solicit your business unable to provide a local address and phone number?
    • This is a giant red flag.
