Nashville, Murfreesboro, Knoxville and Chattanooga TN
What do the Black Plague, hantavirus, Lyme disease, salmonella, and typhus all have in common? Mice and rats have been known to spread these harmful diseases. Rodents are carriers of diseases and spread these maladies through their bites, feces, or the bites of fleas and ticks that then bite humans or pets. This is why it’s so important to clean up properly following a rodent infestation in Nashville. Not sure what to do? Ameri Care Services is going to tell you how.
Step 1: Make sure you’re rid of rodents
When you have rats or mice in your home, the top priority is stopping the infestation. You can set up traps or bait yourself, but we recommend trusting professionals like the team at Ameri Care to handle your rodent extermination needs in Murfreesboro. Once you’ve gone at least a week and not trapped any rodents, you can assume they have been eradicated. Waiting this long will ensure any droppings left behind are no longer infectious.
Step 2: Remove any carcasses
If you must remove a rodent carcass yourself, be extremely careful. As we mentioned, rats and mice are carriers of several serious diseases. Wearing rubber or latex gloves, mix a cleaning formula that consists of 1-part bleach to 9-parts water. Spray down the dead rat or mouse and the immediate area with the solution. Dispose of the body outside, throw away your gloves, and thoroughly wash your hands.
Step 3: Dispose of droppings
There’s a right way and a wrong way to clean up rodent droppings. Use a bleach cleaning solution and moisten all the debris left by mice and rats. Let the cleaner saturate into the droppings for at least five minutes, then wipe up the remnants. Never vacuum or sweep them. This can stir up dust and potentially expose you to the pathogens lingering in the fecal matter.
Step 4: Disinfect
Next, you need to clean the entire surrounding area, eliminating the smells that drew rodents into your home in the first place. Apply the disinfectant over the entire area, as well as any adjacent spots that may have been contaminated by the mice and rats. Scrub away any tracks or prints on your kitchen floor or counters, machine-wash any fabrics the rodents have touched or nested in, then dry them on high heat. Steam-clean any carpets or upholstery that were affected. Make sure you wear rubber or latex gloves. If household items have been exposed that can’t be disinfected with your liquid solution, store them outside in the sunlight for a day or in a disinfected indoor space for at least a week.
Step 5: Eliminate odors
Any lingering odors left from your rodent infestation in Nashville are just going to attract more rats and mice into your home. These odors are most likely in out-of-the-way spots where mice and rats like to congregate: your attic, basement, crawlspace, or any cavities inside your walls. Once the rodents have been eliminated, these areas need to be cleaned, too. Wear a dust mask and gloves made of rubber or latex to protect yourself. Spray your cleaning solution onto any droppings or nest particles and let it saturate for several minutes. Remove any rodent remnants with paper towels and clean the surrounding area with a mop.
